Who this page is for
The dial lines tell me the generation before the serial does.
This page is for the owner of a Seamaster Aqua Terra who wants to sell it and wants to know which one it is. The Aqua Terra has changed its calibre, its dial, and its sizes several times since 2002, and the changes are visible from across a desk. Vertical teak lines mean the 8500 generation. Horizontal lines with the date at six mean the 8900. No lines means an early 2500 or one of the lacquered dials from 2022 onward.
That matters because each generation sells to a different buyer at a different level. A 41.5 mm 8500 with a blue teak dial, a 41 mm 8900 Master Chronometer, and a 38 mm small-seconds are three markets. A 34 mm and a 41 mm with the same dial do not share comparables either.
Omega cards in general, the Extract of the Archives, service parts, and polishing are covered on the Omega page. Here I stay on the Aqua Terra: generation, size, dial, metal, and the photos.

What I check on an Aqua Terra
The points that separate one Aqua Terra from the next.
Generation read from the dial
Teak direction, date position, and the text under the Seamaster line tell me whether you own a 2500, an 8500, an 8900, or a 2022 reference. I confirm it against the caseback and the card before I quote.
Size placed against its own buyers
Aqua Terras run from 28 mm quartz up to 43 mm. The 34 mm sells to one group, the 38 to another, the 41 to a third. I price each against its own size.
Metal and dial colour counted properly
Steel, two-tone, and solid gold are separate markets. Within steel, the dial colour changes the pool of buyers, and I say what yours does.
Inspected by hand
I check the case, crown, dial, movement, serial, and papers myself. Nothing goes to a grading team.
What moves the offer
Six Aqua Terra details that change the number.
Each one moves the offer up or down. I say which way in the reply.
Master Chronometer, or Co-Axial Chronometer
Dials from 2017 onward read Co-Axial Master Chronometer and come with a METAS card. Earlier ones read Co-Axial Chronometer and have the warranty card only. The card is half of a set on an 8900; it never existed for an 8500.
The 15,000 gauss reference
The 2013 antimagnetic Aqua Terra with the calibre 8508 and the yellow seconds hand is a short-run reference with its own following. It is priced against other examples of itself.
Two-tone and gold
Steel with a Sedna gold bezel and centre links sells to a different buyer than full steel. Solid gold cases are priced on the case and the set; I would rather see them in person.
Special editions
Ryder Cup, Olympic Games, and the James Bond Spectre edition have their own markets when the box, card, and edition extras are present. Without the set, they are priced near the standard reference.
Bracelet or strap
Most Aqua Terras left Omega on a bracelet. A watch on its original bracelet with every link sells higher than the same reference on leather or rubber. Send the bracelet.
Dial condition under the crystal
Teak and lacquered dials show dust, hairline marks, and lume ageing in a daylight photo. A clean dial is most of the value on an everyday watch, so I ask for it straight on, no reflections.
How it works
Four steps. Real numbers.
01
Get an offer
Submit the form with photos: dial straight on in daylight so the teak lines and date position read, the caseback (solid or display), the crown and case side, the clasp open with the code, the bracelet laid flat, and the warranty and Master Chronometer cards beside the watch. I reply within 1 business day.
02
Ship or meet
Take the prepaid, insured FedEx label from anywhere in the USA, or book an appointment in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach. A gold Aqua Terra or a Spectre edition I would rather see in person.
03
Inspect and confirm
I open the box on camera and check the dial, crown, caseback, serial, and movement. If it matches the photos, the offer stands.
04
Get paid
Wire or check within 24 hours of inspection. If we do not agree, the watch goes back to you, insured, at my cost.
8500 or 8900
The two Aqua Terras most often confused.
Look at the teak lines and the date. That settles it before the caseback does.
| Criteria | Calibre 8500 generation, 2008 to 2016 | Calibre 8900 generation, 2017 onward |
|---|---|---|
| Teak lines | Vertical | Horizontal |
| Date | At three o'clock | At six o'clock |
| Case sizes | 38.5 and 41.5 mm, plus 34 mm with the calibre 8520 | 38 and 41 mm, plus 34 mm with the calibre 8800 |
| Dial text | Co-Axial Chronometer, or Master Co-Axial on late examples | Co-Axial Master Chronometer |
| Cards | Warranty card only | Warranty card plus Master Chronometer card |
| Case and crown | Heavier crown side, earlier lug shape | Symmetrical case with a conical crown |
Directions, not figures. The exact effect depends on the reference and the week, and I show the arithmetic in the reply.
The detail
What moves an Aqua Terra offer, and why.
The first Aqua Terras: calibre 2500 and plain dials
The Aqua Terra arrived in 2002 as the Seamaster for people who did not want a dive bezel: 150 m of water resistance, a plain dial with applied indexes, and the Co-Axial calibre 2500 in the mechanical versions. Sizes ran from around 36 mm to 42 mm, with a 3313 chronograph in a larger case. Quartz versions are priced as quartz.
The 8500 generation: vertical teak
In 2008 the Aqua Terra took the in-house calibre 8500, a sapphire display back, and the teak dial, with vertical lines modelled on a yacht deck. The main sizes were 38.5 mm and 41.5 mm, with a 34 mm on the calibre 8520 and a 30 mm quartz. Blue, black, silver, and grey teak dials were made, plus GMT, annual calendar, and chronograph versions in larger cases.
Late examples, from around 2014, say Master Co-Axial on the dial. That is the antimagnetic 8500 from before the METAS card existed, and it trades with the rest of the generation. A buyer for an 8500 wants the display back unscratched, the bracelet complete, and no dust under the crystal.
The 15,000 gauss Aqua Terra
In 2013 Omega put the calibre 8508, built to shrug off magnetic fields above 15,000 gauss, into a 41.5 mm Aqua Terra with a black dial and a yellow seconds hand. It was a short run and a technical milestone, and collectors treat it as its own reference. I price it against other examples of itself, and the box and card matter more than usual.
The 8900 generation: horizontal teak and the METAS card
In 2017 the teak lines turned horizontal, the date moved to six o'clock, and the case became symmetrical with a conical crown. The 41 mm took the Master Chronometer calibre 8900, the 38 mm the calibre 8800, and both came with the METAS card beside the warranty card. Sedna gold two-tone and solid gold versions joined, with integrated rubber straps and more dial colours.
This is the generation with the widest pool of buyers today, and blue and black dials draw the most interest. The full set, both cards with matching numbers, is what the next buyer expects. One card missing moves the offer, and I say by how much.
The 2022 refresh: small seconds and lacquered dials
From 2022 the line added small-seconds versions in 38 and 41 mm with the calibres 8802 and 8916, and lacquered dials without teak in 34 and 38 mm. Most arrive with everything: box, both cards, and an unworn bracelet. On a watch this new, a complete set and an unpolished case are the whole conversation.
Metal, editions, and the set
Two-tone Aqua Terras with a gold bezel and gold centre links sell to their own buyer, and solid gold cases are priced on the case first. Diamond-set dials add less than owners expect unless the set is complete. Ryder Cup, Olympic Games, and the Spectre edition each have a market when the edition box and extras are present; without them, I price the watch close to its standard sibling. The 43 mm GMT, annual calendar, and Worldtimer are separate markets again.
When selling to me is not the right call
If your Aqua Terra is an early 2500 that needs a service and a crystal, the offer may be lower than you hoped, and I will say so with the reasons. If you want me to say the 15,000 gauss will keep climbing, I cannot; I buy at what the market pays this week. If the watch is a replica, I will say so and will not buy it.
How to prepare your submission
- Dial straight on in daylight, so the teak direction, the date position, and the colour read correctly.
- The caseback: solid on an early watch, the display window on an 8500 or later.
- The crown and case side, for the crown shape and polishing marks on the lugs.
- The clasp open with the code, and the bracelet laid flat so I can count the links.
- The warranty card and the Master Chronometer card beside the watch, or say which is missing.
- Any edition box or extras for a Ryder Cup, Olympic, or Spectre watch.
- Service history, or say you do not know.
- Ship on my label or meet in person, and which county you are in.
Questions, answered
Before you send an Aqua Terra
How do I tell an 8500 from an 8900 Aqua Terra?
Look at the dial. Vertical teak lines with the date at three o'clock is an 8500. Horizontal lines with the date at six is an 8900, and the dial reads Co-Axial Master Chronometer. No card on either still gets an appraisal, with more weight on the inspection.
Is the antimagnetic 15,000 gauss version worth more?
It has its own market and usually sits above a standard 41.5 mm 8500 in the same condition. How far above depends on the week and the set, and I show the comparison in the reply.
Do you buy the 34 mm Aqua Terra?
Yes. The 34 mm is priced against other 34 mm examples, with the dial, any diamonds, and the set carrying most of the value.
Is two-tone worth more than steel?
It is a different market rather than a higher one. Two-tone usually sells above full steel with a complete set, but to a smaller pool of buyers. I price it against other two-tone examples.
