Who this page is for

A Patek sale turns on paperwork and patience.

People who sell a Patek Philippe tend to fall into three groups. Collectors moving out of a Nautilus or Aquanaut. Families settling an estate with a Calatrava or a complication in it. Owners who want a second opinion before they consign the watch somewhere else.

With Patek, the documents carry more weight than with most brands. The Certificate of Origin, an Extract from the Archives, and a record of service at Patek Philippe can each change who will buy the watch next. So can the original strap and buckle, and whether the watch has ever been worn.

This page walks through what I look at, so my reply makes sense when it arrives. There are no prices here. A few Patek references move fast enough that I would rather hold a figure until I have the watch in hand.

Selling to a private dealer

What a high-value watch needs from a buyer.

Discretion

Your name, the watch, and the offer stay between us. I handle every message and call myself.

Insured both ways

The label is prepaid and insured to declared value, signature required. If we do not agree, it returns insured at my cost.

In person if you prefer

Many Patek owners would rather not ship. I meet by appointment in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach.

Paid within a day

Wire or check within 24 hours of inspection. We settle the method before anything moves.

What I check on a Patek Philippe

Six things that set the offer.

Each one shifts the number. The reply tells you which ones mattered for your watch.

Reference, movement, and case numbers

Patek records a movement number and a case number for each watch. They should agree with each other and with the papers.

Certificate of Origin

The certificate issued at sale ties those numbers to the watch. It is the first document a Patek buyer asks for.

Extract from the Archives

Ordered from Patek Philippe, it confirms when the watch was made and its original specification. It matters most on older pieces.

Service at Patek Philippe

A service by the manufacture, with its paperwork, reassures the next buyer. An unrecorded independent service raises questions.

Original strap, buckle, or clasp

A Patek strap with its signed buckle or fold-over clasp keeps a dress watch complete. Generic straps lower the offer.

Case, dial, and condition

Sharp case edges, an original dial, and unpolished finishing. Sealed, never-worn pieces are judged on their own terms.

How it works

Four steps, handled by one person.

  1. 01

    Send the details

Use the appraisal form. Include the reference, the papers, and photos of the dial, case back, and buckle or clasp. I reply within 1 business day.

  2. 02

    Ship or meet

Take the prepaid insured FedEx label, or book a private appointment in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach.

  3. 03

    Inspect on camera

I open the parcel on camera and check numbers, papers, movement, and case. If the watch matches the photos, the offer stands.

  4. 04

    Get paid

Wire or check within 24 hours of inspection. If we do not agree, the watch comes back insured, at my cost.

Complete or incomplete

What each Patek item adds, and what its absence costs.

A missing document rarely stops a sale. It changes how much I can prove about the watch, and how far the next buyer has to trust it.

What each Patek item adds, and what its absence costs.
CriteriaWith itWithout it
Certificate of OriginThe watch is tied to its first sale; the widest pool of Patek buyersStill appraised; an Extract and the inspection carry more of the weight
Extract from the ArchivesConfirms date and original specification, useful on vintage and older piecesOptional on a recent watch with a matching certificate; I will say if it is worth ordering
Patek Philippe service recordShows the movement was serviced by the manufactureI inspect the movement either way; unrecorded work is priced as unknown
Original strap and signed buckle or claspPresents as the watch left the boutiqueA replacement strap is easy; a missing gold buckle or clasp is a real cost
Box, outer box, and bookletsCompletes the set for a collectorSmall effect on most pieces; larger on sport references and limited editions
Never worn, protective film intactSold as unworn, a separate market from worn examplesOnce worn, the watch is graded on condition like any other

These are directions, not figures. The effect depends on the reference and the current market. My reply shows the reasoning for your watch.

The detail

What moves a Patek Philippe offer, and why.

Three Patek markets: sport, dress, and complications

Patek Philippe watches do not trade as one group. The Nautilus and Aquanaut are steel or gold sport watches with integrated bracelets or straps, and demand for them can swing quickly. The Calatrava and other time-only dress watches trade more steadily, judged on metal, size, dial, and condition.

Complications form a third market. Annual calendars, perpetual calendars, chronographs, world time pieces, and minute repeaters are valued on the movement, the condition of the dial, and the service history. A complication needs a careful movement check, so I inspect these in person before confirming a number.

The Extract from the Archives

Patek Philippe keeps records for the watches it has made. An owner can request an Extract from the Archives through the brand. It confirms the date of manufacture, the date of sale, and the original specification, such as metal and dial.

Should you order one before selling? For a vintage or older watch without its certificate, often yes, because it answers the first question any buyer will ask. For a recent watch with a matching certificate, usually not. The request takes time and has a fee. Ask me first and I will tell you whether it changes the offer on your reference.

Certificate of Origin and the numbers on the watch

Each Patek carries a movement number and a case number. The certificate issued at sale records them. When the numbers on the watch match the certificate, the watch can be traced with confidence. Send a photo of the certificate with your first message, with the numbers visible. If the certificate is lost, say so. I will still appraise the watch and explain how the gap affects the offer.

Service at Patek Philippe versus elsewhere

A service at Patek Philippe comes with paperwork and, at times, replaced parts such as a new crystal, crown, or hands. Collectors trust that record. Work by an independent watchmaker can be excellent, but without records the next buyer cannot verify it. Please do not book a service just to sell. I inspect the movement either way and account for any service it needs.

Straps, buckles, and the Nautilus bracelet

Most Patek dress watches leave the boutique on a leather strap with a signed buckle or fold-over clasp, often in the same metal as the case. On a gold watch, that buckle is part of the value, so keep it even if you swapped the strap. On a Nautilus, the bracelet matters: check for stretch, missing links, and polishing on the mix of brushed and polished surfaces. Send every spare link you have.

Sealed, unworn, and worn

Some Patek pieces are sold still sealed, with the protective film on the case and clasp. An unworn watch with every document belongs to a separate market from a worn one. Once the film comes off and the watch is worn, it is graded on condition like any other. If yours is unworn, do not size or wear it before we speak.

Why some references are quoted only in person

A few Patek references, the steel Nautilus models above all, have moved quickly enough that a number given from photos can be stale within days. For these, I explain by message what drives the number, then give a firm offer at inspection. That is not a tactic. It keeps me from promising a figure I would later have to walk back.

When selling to me is not the right call

If you want the highest possible price and can wait months, an auction or a patient private sale may get more, after fees and time. If the watch is a family piece and you are unsure, keep it. If you want a documented, insured sale with payment within 24 hours of inspection, that is the job I do.

How to prepare your submission

  • The reference number and, if you have them, the movement and case numbers.
  • A photo of the Certificate of Origin or Extract, numbers visible.
  • Daylight photos: dial straight on, case back, both case sides, and the buckle, clasp, or bracelet.
  • Service history: Patek Philippe, independent, or unknown, with dates if you have them.
  • Whether the watch is unworn, and what came with it: boxes, booklets, spare links, original strap.
  • Whether you prefer to ship on my label or meet in person, and your county.

Questions, answered

Before you send a Patek Philippe

Should I order an Extract from the Archives before I sell?

Only if it changes the offer. It helps most on older watches without a certificate. Send me the details first and I will tell you whether it is worth ordering.

What if I lost the Certificate of Origin?

I will still appraise the watch. The offer is lower, and I will show you why for that reference. The movement and case numbers, and an Extract if you have one, carry more weight.

Why won't you quote my Nautilus from photos?

Some steel Nautilus references move too fast for a photo quote to hold. I explain what drives the number by message, then confirm a firm offer at inspection.

Should I have the watch serviced or polished first?

No. Polishing removes metal and softens the case edges. A service just before selling rarely pays for itself. I inspect the movement and account for any service it needs.

Can we meet instead of shipping a watch this valuable?

Yes. I meet by appointment across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach. Shipping is also covered: prepaid FedEx, insured to declared value, signature required, USA only.
