Who this page is for

Most AP sellers own a Royal Oak. The details still differ.

Audemars Piguet value sits mostly in one family. The Royal Oak, launched in 1972 with a design by Gérald Genta, is the watch most AP sellers bring me. The Royal Oak Offshore follows, then the Code 11.59 and the Millenary.

Two Royal Oaks that look alike to a casual eye can sit far apart. The reference generation, the state of the bracelet, and whether the warranty card is with the watch decide much of the gap. Polishing decides much of the rest.

This page explains how I read each of those, so my reply is easy to follow. I do not post prices. Some AP references move too fast to quote safely from a page, and a few I confirm only after inspection.

Selling to a private dealer

What you get when one person runs the sale.

A close look at finishing

I examine every facet of the case and bracelet under a loupe. That is where an AP offer is won or lost.

Shipping risk on me

Prepaid FedEx label, insured to declared value, signature required, opened on camera when it arrives.

A specific number

Within 1 business day you get an offer and the reasons behind it, or a plain note that the reference needs to be seen first.

Sell or trade

Take payment, or put the value toward another watch. Payout within 24 hours of inspection if you sell.

What I check on an Audemars Piguet

Six things that decide the offer.

Each one can move the number. My reply names the ones that mattered for your watch.

Reference and generation

The reference tells me the family, size, and generation. A 15202 and a 16202 are both Jumbos, but they are not the same watch to a buyer.

Brushed and polished facets

A Royal Oak alternates satin-brushed surfaces with polished bevels. Crisp transitions are worth more than a case that has been buffed round.

Bracelet links and clasp

Every original link, no stretch, a tight clasp. Missing links on an integrated bracelet are hard and costly to replace.

Warranty card

The AP card records the serial and the sale. It is the first document a Royal Oak buyer asks to see.

AP service history

Service at Audemars Piguet, with papers, tells me what was done and which parts were replaced.

Straps, box, and extras

Offshore and Code 11.59 straps, the original buckle or deployant clasp, spare links, box, and booklets.

How it works

Four steps, no hand-offs.

  1. 01

    Send the details

Fill in the appraisal form with the reference and photos of the dial, case back, bracelet, clasp, and card. I reply within 1 business day.

  2. 02

    Ship or meet

Use the prepaid insured FedEx label, or book an appointment in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach.

  3. 03

    Inspect the finishing

I open the box on camera and check the serial, movement, case, and bracelet. If the watch matches the photos, the offer stands.

    Get paid

Wire or check within 24 hours of inspection. If we do not agree, the watch returns to you insured, at my cost.

Original or altered

How each AP detail shifts the offer.

None of these stops a sale. Each one changes how the watch compares with others of the same reference.

How each AP detail shifts the offer.
CriteriaAs deliveredChanged or missing
Case and bezel finishingSharp edges between brushed and polished surfaces; preferred by collectorsA heavy polish rounds the octagon and the bevels; priced below unpolished examples
Integrated braceletAll links present, no stretch, original claspMissing links are a real cost on a tapered Royal Oak bracelet
AP warranty cardTies the serial to its first sale; the widest buyer poolStill appraised; the inspection and the serial carry more weight
Service at Audemars PiguetDocumented work and known replaced partsI inspect the movement anyway; unrecorded work is priced as unknown
Original strap and buckle (Offshore, Code 11.59)Presents complete, ready for the next ownerAftermarket straps are common; a missing signed buckle or deployant matters more
Box, booklets, and spare linksCompletes the setSmall effect on most pieces; larger on limited and discontinued references

These are directions, not figures. The effect depends on the reference and the market that week, and I show the reasoning in my reply.

The detail

What moves an Audemars Piguet offer, and why.

Royal Oak generations are valued separately

The Royal Oak has been made in many references since 1972, and each generation trades on its own. The 39mm Jumbo is the clearest case. The long-running 15202 was succeeded by the 16202, with a new movement, and buyers treat the two differently.

The same holds for the 41mm time-and-date models, such as the 15400, 15500, and 15510, and for the chronographs. Size, dial color, and metal matter as well. Send the reference number from the case back or the card, and I will place the watch in its generation.

The finishing is the value

A Royal Oak case and bracelet alternate satin-brushed surfaces with polished bevels. The octagonal bezel, with its eight visible screws, follows the same pattern. Those sharp transitions are what collectors pay for. A polish by an inexperienced hand blurs them, and the loss cannot be reversed. Please do not polish the watch before you sell it.

The integrated bracelet and clasp

The Royal Oak bracelet is built into the case and tapers link by link. That makes it hard to replace. I check for stretch, worn pins, scratched center links, and a clasp that still closes firmly. Missing links are the most common problem I see on AP bracelets, so look in drawers for spares and send them with the watch.

The warranty card and AP service

Modern Audemars Piguet watches come with a warranty card that records the serial and the date of sale. A card that matches the watch is the most useful document you can send. If you have had the watch serviced at Audemars Piguet, include the papers. They tell the next buyer which parts were replaced. An independent service without records is priced as unknown history.

Royal Oak Offshore: straps, size, and editions

The Offshore arrived in 1993 as a larger, bolder Royal Oak. Many Offshores came on rubber or leather straps with a signed buckle or deployant clasp, so keep those even if you changed straps. The family includes many limited and special editions. Tell me the exact reference and any edition marking on the case back.

Code 11.59 and Millenary

The Code 11.59, introduced in 2019, has a round case with an octagonal middle and is a newer collection on the resale market. The Millenary, known for its oval case, is a quieter line. Both are judged on reference, metal, condition, and completeness rather than on the Royal Oak's market. I buy both and appraise them on their own terms.

Discontinued references: sell now or hold

When AP discontinues a reference, interest in it can rise, fall, or hold. Nobody can tell you which with certainty, and I will not pretend to. What I can tell you is what the watch would fetch from me today, and what would change that number. If you do not need to sell, holding a well-kept, complete discontinued Royal Oak is a reasonable choice.

When selling to me is not the right call

If you can wait months for a private buyer, you may get more than a dealer offer. If the watch is a replica or has aftermarket parts, I will tell you, and I will not buy it. If you want an insured, documented sale and payment within 24 hours of inspection, send me the details.

How to prepare your submission

  • The reference number, from the case back or the warranty card.
  • A photo of the warranty card next to the watch, serial visible.
  • Daylight photos: dial straight on, case back, the bezel at an angle, the bracelet laid flat, the clasp open.
  • Every spare link, plus any original strap, buckle, or deployant clasp.
  • Service history: Audemars Piguet, independent, or unknown.
  • Whether you prefer to ship on my label or meet in person, and your county.

Questions, answered

Before you send an Audemars Piguet

What if my Royal Oak doesn't have the warranty card?

I'll still appraise it. The offer is lower, and I'll show you why for that reference. The serial and an in-person inspection carry more of the weight.

Should I have my Royal Oak polished before selling?

No. The brushed and polished facets are a large part of the value. A polish softens them for good and lowers the offer.

I'm missing bracelet links. Can I still sell?

Yes. Missing links lower the offer because the tapered Royal Oak bracelet is costly to complete. Send any spares you have.

Why won't you quote some AP references from photos?

A few references move too quickly for a photo quote to hold. I explain what drives the number by message, then confirm a firm offer at inspection.

Do you buy AP watches from outside South Florida?

Yes, anywhere in the USA, on the prepaid insured FedEx label. I do not ship internationally.

Can I trade my AP instead of selling it?

Yes. Its value can go toward any watch in my case or one I source for you.
