Who this page is for
A Reverso is a decision about size before it is a decision about anything else.
Buyers who come to me for a Jaeger-LeCoultre usually want a Reverso and have not yet settled the size, or want a round dress watch and are stuck between the Master Ultra Thin and the Master Control. Underneath are the same questions every time: which generation, which calibre, is the engraving on the back a problem, and does the registered warranty follow the watch. This page answers those from the buyer's side.
How JLC references are read for condition, the carriage test, the 1000 Hours Control, JLC Care, vintage LeCoultre signatures, all of that is on my sell page for Jaeger-LeCoultre and its Reverso page. I link it rather than repeat it. Here you get what to check before you pay, how a JLC gets into my case, and when to search instead of wait.
No prices on this page. Jaeger-LeCoultre's market moves by reference and size, and a number printed here would be wrong soon. The catalog carries the figures for what is in the case.

Buying a JLC from a private dealer
What you get that a listing cannot give you.
Size on the wrist, not on a spec sheet
A small, medium, and large Reverso wear nothing alike, and a rectangular case reads bigger than its width. At an appointment you try them. By remote, I film the watch on a wrist.
The carriage, turned by hand
I flip every Reverso, feel the lock, and check the cradle for play before I buy it. Rail wear is the most common Reverso fault, and it does not show in photos.
The back, described honestly
A blank back, a factory engraving, or a previous owner's initials. I say which, with a straight photo, so you decide before you pay whether an engraving is history or a problem.
Seen before you pay
By appointment in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach, or by photos, video, and a call anywhere in the USA. Nothing ships until you have seen it.
Guaranteed genuine
Every JLC I sell was authenticated by me before it was listed: calibre against reference, serial against card, case, carriage, buckle. The known history is in the listing.
Before you pay for any Jaeger-LeCoultre
Six things to check, wherever you buy.
I check these before a JLC reaches my case. If you are buying elsewhere, check them yourself.
Calibre against reference
Jaeger-LeCoultre builds its own movements, so the calibre should be the one the reference shipped with: an 822 in a hand-wound Reverso, an 854 in a Duoface, an 899 in a Master Control. Ask to see it or for service papers that name it.
The reversible case
Slide the case out of its cradle and turn it. It should move without grinding, lock with a firm click, and sit flat with no rocking. Worn rails are repairable, and the repair is yours to price if the seller did not.
Both faces on a Duoface
A Duoface carries a second dial on the back, driven by the same movement. Inspect both dials and both sets of hands. A second face doubles the places a swapped part can hide.
Card and JLC Care status
The warranty card or certificate ties the serial to its first sale. JLC Care registration extends the warranty; ask whether the watch is registered and whether the extension transfers to you.
Case lines and the gadroons
A Reverso's case edges and the ribbed gadroons at top and bottom are sharp from the factory. A polish softens them. Look along the case in raking light.
Signed buckle or folding clasp
Most JLCs left the boutique on leather with a signed pin buckle or folding clasp. Straps wear out; buckles are not supposed to. Ask whether the buckle is the original.
How buying works here
Four steps, one person.
01
Choose from the case, or ask
Browse the Jaeger-LeCoultre references in the catalog. If the Reverso size, dial, or Master reference you want is not there, tell me and I search my private network for it.
02
See it
By appointment, Monday to Saturday, in your county or at my Brickell office. Out of state, I send photos and video, including the case turned, and I walk you through it on a call before anything ships.
03
Pay and take delivery
I hand-deliver in South Florida. Elsewhere in the USA the watch ships FedEx Priority Overnight, fully insured, signature at both ends, in discreet unbranded packaging.
04
Inspect it yourself
Remote purchases come with an inspection window on arrival, stated in the terms. If the watch is not what the photos and the call described, it comes back.
A buyer's decision
Master Ultra Thin or Master Control.
The two round Jaeger-LeCoultres most buyers weigh against each other. Same manufacture, different purpose on the wrist.
| Criteria | Master Ultra Thin | Master Control |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | A dress watch; built to vanish under a cuff | An everyday round watch; more case, more presence, more function |
| Case | Slim, mostly 39 to 41 mm, often precious metal in the simpler references | Thicker, 40 mm in the current Date and Chronograph; steel is the common metal |
| Calibres you will meet | Thin automatics such as the 896 and the 925 in the Moon references | The 899 family in the Date, and chronograph and Memovox calibres above it |
| Complications | Date, moon phase, or nothing at all; the appeal is the restraint | Date, calendar, chronograph, and the Memovox alarm; the appeal is the range |
| Pre-owned supply | Steady, with many precious-metal examples that trade on metal and condition | Deep in steel; the discontinued generations are where the value often sits |
| Who it suits | A buyer who already has a sports watch and wants the opposite | A buyer who wants one JLC to wear every day |
If you want one watch for everything, the Master Control is the safer buy. If you want the thinnest thing in your drawer, the Ultra Thin. Both are checked the same way: calibre, card, case lines, buckle.
The detail
Buying a Jaeger-LeCoultre pre-owned, decision by decision.
Reverso: size first, then generation
The Reverso has been made since 1931 in small, medium, and large cases, and the same dial reads differently in each. Try the sizes before you choose a reference. Then choose the generation: the Classic line, the Tribute line that draws on early Reverso dials, the Duoface with a second dial on the back, and the Grande Reverso of earlier years. The Reverso sell page lists the references by size and generation.
The engraving question
The Reverso's solid back was designed to be engraved, and many are: initials, a date, a message from the first owner. An engraving is not a fault, and on a watch with its papers it is part of the history. It is a reason to pay less, because the next buyer may want it gone and removing it takes metal off the case. Decide before you shop whether you will live with someone else's initials. I photograph every back straight on so you know what is there.
The registered warranty and what follows the watch
A modern JLC comes with a warranty card or certificate, and owners can register it with JLC Care, which extends the warranty. Whether that extension follows the watch to you depends on how the registration was made, so ask before you pay rather than after. I list the registration status on every Jaeger-LeCoultre in the case. Older pieces without papers can be confirmed by the manufacture from its records, which is worth doing before a purchase, not after.
What to check before you pay, wherever you buy
Confirm the calibre against the reference. Turn the Reverso case and feel for grinding or play. Look along the case lines and gadroons in raking light. Inspect both faces on a Duoface. Read the card and ask about JLC Care. Check that the buckle is signed. Ask for manufacture service records; a JLC serviced by anyone else without papers is unknown history.
How a Jaeger-LeCoultre gets into my case
I buy every JLC in person or on my own insured label and inspect it the day it arrives: calibre against reference, serial against card, carriage turned and locked, both dials on a Duoface, case lines under a loupe, buckle checked. If a watch needs service, it goes to Jaeger-LeCoultre before it is listed and the papers come with it. The listing names the size, generation, calibre, registration status, what is on the back, and what came with the watch.
Catalog or a commissioned search
If the Reverso in the case is your size and the back is clean, buy it; clean large Reversos with their papers do not sit long. If you want a specific dial, a discontinued Grande Reverso, a Master Control from a generation JLC no longer makes, tell me. I source through a private network and buy for you only after the same inspection a catalog piece gets. A search takes longer than a purchase from the case, and I will not promise a date.
When buying a JLC from me is not the right call
If you want a current Reverso Tribute or Master Control in a standard configuration with the registration in your own name, a boutique will sell you one new, and that may serve you better. If the only Reverso you like has an engraving you cannot live with, wait for another; do not buy and regret. If you want a discontinued reference, a complete set, or one person who turned the case and will deliver the watch by hand, that is what I do. A trade toward the JLC is credited after the same inspection.
Questions, answered
Before you buy a Jaeger-LeCoultre
Can I see the watch in person before I pay?
Yes. By appointment, Monday to Saturday, in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach, or at my office in Brickell. With a Reverso I recommend it, because the size is decided on the wrist.
Does an engraving on the back lower what I should pay?
Usually, yes, because the next buyer may want it removed and that takes metal off the case. I photograph every back straight on and price the watch with the engraving in view.
Does the JLC Care extension transfer to me?
It depends on how the watch was registered. I list the registration status on every JLC so you know before you pay, and I will say plainly when the extension does not follow the watch.
Do you sell to buyers outside South Florida?
Yes, anywhere in the USA. Photos, video with the case turned, and a call before it ships, fully insured with signature required, and an inspection window on arrival stated in the terms.
