My Timeless Pieces

Sell your Luminor · South Florida · by appointment

Sell your Luminor to someone who reads the case before the dial.

Luminor or Luminor 1950, 40 to 47 mm, a hand-wound Unitas base or an in-house P.9010: the case and the calibre set the offer before condition does. Send photos and I reply within 1 business day with a number and the reasons for it.

  • Luminor and Luminor 1950 cases priced on their own comparables
  • Crown guard lever, sandwich dial, and strap set read from photos
  • Prepaid insured FedEx label, or an appointment in your county

Who this page is for

The Luminor you own is one of several, and they are not priced alike.

This page is for the owner of a Luminor who wants to know which one they have in a dealer's eyes and what that does to the offer. A PAM 111 on a hand-wound Unitas base, a PAM 312 in the thicker Luminor 1950 case with the in-house P.9000, and a 42 mm PAM 1392 on the P.9010 all say Luminor on the dial. They are not compared against each other.

Most Luminors I see were bought new in the 2000s and worn daily, or sit in the box with one strap and no screwdriver.

Reading a PAM number, movement origin by era, the warranty card, and polishing in general are on the Panerai page. Here I cover only the Luminor: the two cases, the crown guard, the dial, the calibres, and what must be in your photos.

Selling a Luminor to a private dealer

What a Luminor specialist does differently.

Case family before condition

I place the watch as a Luminor or a Luminor 1950 first, then judge the case, lever, and dial against what that family should look like.

The crown guard read as a part

The lever, the bridge, and the pin wear in known ways. Lost tension, a bent lever, or a bridge replaced at service each points the offer a different way.

Sandwich or painted, under the loupe

A cut-out sandwich dial and a printed dial can share a PAM number from different years. I check which you have and whether it belongs to the case.

The strap set and screwdriver counted

Most Luminors left the boutique with a second strap, a screwdriver, and a buckle. A complete set moves the offer, and I say by how much. Pre-Vendôme pieces are quoted in person.

What I check on a Luminor

Five things that move a Luminor offer.

The Luminor-specific variables. PAM numbering, the card, and service are on the Panerai page.

Luminor or Luminor 1950 case

The original Luminor case is flatter with a smaller crown guard. The 1950 case is thicker and rounder with a domed crystal. They trade on separate comparables.

Case size: 40, 42, 44, or 47 mm

The 44 mm is the core of the line. The 47 mm hand-wound 1950 pieces and the 42 mm P.9010 Marina each have their own following.

Hand-wound or automatic

A hand-wound PAM 111 on a Unitas base, an eight-day P.5000, and an automatic P.9010 are three markets. The caseback shows me which you have.

Sandwich dial or painted dial

A sandwich dial has a lume layer under a cut-out plate, so the numerals look deep. A painted dial is flat. The same PAM can carry either.

Plexi or sapphire

The PAM 372 and a few others carry a domed plexi that scratches and polishes clear. Sapphire does not scratch but can chip at the edge.

How it works

Four steps, Luminor photos in the first.

  1. 01

    Get an offer

Submit the appraisal form with photos of the dial in daylight, the crown guard and lever from the side, the full caseback engraving, the case flank between the lugs, each strap and buckle, the screwdriver, and the warranty card. I reply personally within 1 business day.

  2. 02

    Ship or meet

Take the prepaid, fully insured FedEx label, or book an appointment in Miami-Dade, Broward, or Palm Beach. Pre-Vendôme pieces and early Luminor 1950 references are best seen in person.

  3. 03

    Inspect and confirm

I open the box on camera and check the case, lever tension, dial construction, crystal, calibre, PAM number, and card against the family. If it matches the photos, the offer stands.

  4. 04

    Get paid

Wire or check within 24 hours of inspection. If we do not agree, the watch goes back to you, insured, at my cost.

The detail

What moves a Luminor offer, case by case.

Two cases share one name

The Luminor case is the one Panerai relaunched in the 1990s: a cushion case, a flat sapphire crystal, and the crown guard with its lever. The Luminor 1950 case arrived around 2002, thicker through the middle, rounder at the flanks, with a larger guard and a domed crystal. From across a room they look the same. Side by side they are two watches, and the market treats them that way.

Both cases come as a Base (hours and minutes only) or a Marina (small seconds at nine). In most generations the Base sits a little below the Marina. The thinner Luminor Due is covered on the Panerai page.

Base and Marina: the hand-wound Unitas references

The PAM 000 and 112 are Base references, and the PAM 005 and 111 are Marina references, all 44 mm and hand-wound on OP calibres built from the Unitas 6497 base. The PAM 104 adds a date and an automatic OP calibre on an ETA base. These are the Luminors most people own. They ran for many years, so I read the dial to place one within its run: the 111 was sandwich in some years and painted in others.

Luminor 1950 and the in-house calibres

The PAM 312 is the Luminor 1950 Marina 3 Days Automatic, 44 mm, on the in-house P.9000. It is the reference most 1950 owners have. The 47 mm hand-wound trio, PAM 372, 422, and 423, runs the P.3000 with a sandwich dial; the 372 has the domed plexi. Around 2016 the slimmer P.9010 replaced the P.9000 in the 44 mm Marina, giving the PAM 1312 and 1314, and the 42 mm PAM 1392 followed. The P.9010 pieces sit closer to new, so the card and the box count for more.

The crown guard: what wears and what it means

The crown guard is a bridge over the crown with a lever that presses the crown against its seal. The lever should snap shut and hold the crown with no play. A lever that drops, a bent lever, or a bridge sitting proud of the case tells me it has been bent or swapped. Panerai replaces crown guards at service; a new bridge is not a fault, but it reads as a replaced part, and the offer moves with it.

Sandwich, painted, plexi, and sapphire

A sandwich dial is two plates: a lume layer underneath and a cut-out plate on top, so the numerals sit below the surface. A painted dial is one plate with the lume printed on. Panerai used both, sometimes under the same PAM number, so I check which you have and whether the lume matches the hands.

Most Luminors have a sapphire crystal. A few 1950 references, the PAM 372 above all, carry a domed plexi that scratches with wear and polishes clear. On plexi I look for gouges and crazing at the edge. On sapphire I look for a chip at the bevel, which cannot be fixed.

Sizes, eight days, GMT, and chronographs

The 40 mm Luminor Marina of the PAM 048, 049, and 050 era is a smaller automatic with a date, quoted on its own comparables. The Luminor 8 Days, PAM 510 and 590, runs the hand-wound P.5000. The Luminor GMT adds a second hour hand; the Luminor Chrono references carry a chronograph on an automatic base. Each is a separate market, and the caseback and dial layout tell me which you have.

Straps, the buckle, and the screwdriver

A Luminor uses screw bars, not spring bars, so the strap comes off with the flat screwdriver Panerai puts in the box. Most sets include a leather strap, a rubber strap, and a tang buckle or a deployant. A second strap never worn, the original buckle, and the screwdriver each move the offer up. Strap bars chewed by a wrong driver show between the lugs.

When selling to me is not the right call

If you own a Pre-Vendôme Luminor, a numbered boutique edition, or a 47 mm 1950 with an unusual dial, a specialist auction may reach a collector I cannot, and I will say so after inspection. If you want the watch sold this week, insured, inspected by one person, and paid within 24 hours of that inspection, this is the right page.

How to prepare your Luminor submission

  • The dial straight on, in daylight, close enough to see whether the numerals are cut out or printed.
  • The crown guard from the side with the lever closed, then open, showing the bridge, the pin, and the two screws.
  • The full caseback engraving, the caseback window if there is one, and the case flank between the lugs.
  • Each strap with its buckle, the screwdriver, the box, and the warranty card beside the watch.
  • Any Panerai service record, and the old crown guard or strap if one came back in a bag.

Questions, answered

Before you send a Luminor

Which Luminor do I have?

Look at the case from the side. A flatter case with a flat crystal is a Luminor; a thicker, rounder case with a domed crystal is a Luminor 1950. Small seconds at nine makes it a Marina. The PAM number on the caseback confirms it.

Is a hand-wound PAM worth less?

Not as a rule. The hand-wound 111 and 112 have a following of their own, and the 47 mm hand-wound 1950 references sit above most automatics. I price each against its own comparables.

Is the in-house movement worth more?

Usually, against a Unitas-based Luminor of the same size and age. The in-house pieces are newer, so the card and the box count for more. A clean early 111 with a sandwich dial can still outsell a tired 312.

Do you buy the 40 mm Luminor?

Yes. The 40 mm Marina is quoted on its own comparables. Send the same photos as for the 44 mm, including the caseback.

Should I polish the crown guard before I send it?

No. The guard and the case flanks are brushed, and a home polish turns brushing into swirl marks that I price as a refinished case. Send it as it is.
